The British sports network The Athletic has revealed a striking financial detail in Ferran Torres’s transfer from Manchester City to Barcelona. This hidden clause could be the decisive factor driving the Catalan giants to sell the Spanish international this summer instead of renewing his contract.
According to the report, the original agreement signed in January 2022 includes a special clause. It stipulates that Barcelona must pay an additional €7 million to €8 million to Manchester City if they decide to extend Torres’s contract in the future.
When the transfer was initially finalized, Barcelona paid a base fee of €55 million, plus €10 million in performance-related add-ons that have already been fully triggered. If the club proceeds with a contract extension, this special renewal clause would push the total package of the transfer to nearly €73 million.
Hansi Flick’s Attack and the Karim Adeyemi Factor
While Ferran Torres remains an important asset under manager Hansi Flick, this heavy financial burden explains why Barcelona’s board is open to selling him this summer. The offensive line is already facing intense competition, especially with Barcelona closing in on the signing of Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund, and with contract talks showing no notable progress.
Club officials believe that offloading the 26-year-old forward this summer solves two problems at once:
-
Avoiding the Penalty: It saves the club from paying the hefty renewal bonus to Manchester City.
-
Preventing Free Agency Risk: It eliminates the danger of losing Torres for free once his current contract expires, a scenario that would mean a total loss of his market value.
PSG Leading the Race
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) remains the club most interested in securing Torres’s signature. However, the player prefers to take his time until his campaign with the Spain national team at the 2026 World Cup concludes. His final decision will be made after a scheduled conversation with Hansi Flick regarding his tactical role in the squad next season.
