Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for a fee in the region of £36m, which triggers the release clause in his contract at Villa Park.
The pursuit of Tielemans intensified after Sky in Italy confirmed that Manchester United’s move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson collapsed due to a failed medical. United had previously agreed a £38m fee with the Italian club before the deal fell through.
Tielemans has been one of the standout stars of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, guiding Belgium to the quarter-finals. He scored two crucial goals in the Round of 32 against Senegal, inspiring the Red Devils’ dramatic comeback from 2-0 down to win 3-2.
Negotiations Accelerate After World Cup Exit
Following Belgium’s World Cup exit at the hands of Spain, talks between Tielemans and Manchester United advanced rapidly. It is understood that an official announcement is just a matter of hours away, with the midfielder set to join Michael Carrick’s squad.
The 29-year-old reportedly received lucrative offers from the Saudi Pro League, while Aston Villa also attempted to convince him to sign a contract extension. However, once Manchester United’s interest became concrete, it became his absolute priority.
Tielemans’ Villa Legacy: Tielemans joined Aston Villa on a free transfer from Leicester City in 2023, making 134 appearances and scoring 10 goals. Under Unai Emery, he helped Villa qualify for the Champions League twice, reach the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite competition, and lift the UEFA Europa League trophy last season.
