Initially, Italy was widely expected to appoint a local manager from a pool of high-profile Italian coaches—specifically Antonio Conte or Roberto Mancini. However, Maldini’s arrival has completely turned the tables, shifting the federation’s strategy 180 degrees.

Guardiola’s International Management Ambitions

The famous Italian outlet indicated that Maldini hopes to secure Guardiola, who has previously expressed a strong interest in international management. This transition aligns with the Spanish tactician’s career plans following his departure from Manchester City at the end of last season.

The Financial Hurdle: Guardiola’s Salary vs FIGC Budget

The major obstacle blocking the deal remains financial. Guardiola’s staggering salary, which is estimated around 20 million euros, is far beyond the FIGC’s current budget. The federation can only afford such a luxury with substantial external financial backing.

While reports suggest that Serie A clubs might be willing to financially contribute to funding the mega-deal, a significant gap remains between Italy’s financial capabilities and Guardiola’s demands. The “Philosopher” would either need to slash his wage demands considerably or agree to an alternative compromise.

Maldini’s Alternative Shortlist: Ancelotti and Pirlo

While Guardiola remains Maldini’s primary target, the AC Milan legend is already considering realistic alternatives due to the complexity of the operation. Among the potential candidates are Carlo Ancelotti and Andrea Pirlo.

Meanwhile, both Antonio Conte and Roberto Mancini are reportedly out of the running for now. However, returning to either of them could still serve as a last resort should Maldini’s pursuit of his top targets fall through.
