Adams featured in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches during the tournament, helping the Bafana Bafana reach the historic knockout rounds before being eliminated by co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32.

“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams,” South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, said in an official statement.

Investigation Underway: South African police confirmed they have launched an investigation after the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered at a residence in Schotsche Kloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning.

While the official cause of death has not yet been confirmed, local South African media reports suggest that Adams may have tragically taken his own life following a severe, months-long battle with depression.

Showing immense resilience during the World Cup, Adams started in South Africa’s 1-1 Group A draw against the Czech Republic, playing through the grief of learning that his grandmother had passed away just hours before kickoff.

The talented midfielder began his professional career at Stellenbosch FC before securing a high-profile transfer to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, where he rapidly became an integral part of the squad, winning both the domestic league title and the CAF Champions League.
