Egyptian giants Al Ahly were not Barcelona’s initial choice for the upcoming Joan Gamper Trophy. However, former Real Madrid defender Álvaro Arbeloa is the unexpected reason why the Catalan club decided to host the “Red Devils” at the Camp Nou this coming August.
Barcelona traditionally kicks off its season with a festive home friendly known as the Joan Gamper Trophy. Since its inception in the 1960s, participation has historically been restricted to European and Latin American clubs.
According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Premier League side Fulham was originally the frontrunner to face Barcelona on August 19. However, the London club’s recent appointment of Spanish manager Álvaro Arbeloa prompted Joan Laporta’s board to abruptly withdraw the invitation.
The Rivalry Factor: Arbeloa is a product of Real Madrid’s academy and has a long history of provocative statements against Barcelona. Most recently, during his tenure as a Real Madrid youth coach last season, he publicly accused Barcelona of referee bribery, claiming it was the sole reason behind the Blaugrana’s domestic success over the past two decades.
Consequently, Barcelona’s management felt that a historic season-opening celebration like the Joan Gamper Trophy should not feature a prominent club adversary. As they reviewed alternative options, Al Ahly SC emerged as the ideal candidate.
By inviting the African champions, Barcelona aims to strategically penetrate the Egyptian and Arab football markets. The club anticipates that this historic fixture will unlock massive commercial and economic opportunities in the Middle East, rivaling their lucrative tours in North America and Southeast Asia.
