Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has sparked massive controversy following explosive remarks targeting the United States, describing Belgium’s victory as a “punishment” for American political leaders who showed a lack of respect toward the Red Devils.
In the buildup to the match, U.S. President Donald Trump intervened to successfully overturn a red card for Folarin Balogun, allowing the striker to feature in the game. However, his presence did little to aid Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, as the USMNT suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat and crashed out of the 2026 World Cup round of 16.
Courtois Slams USMNT Quality, Compares Them to Senegal
Speaking with immense anger after the match, Courtois stated, “We punished the Americans for the lack of respect they showed us over the past few days.”
The Real Madrid shot-stopper then took a swipe at the footballing standard in the United States, mockingly adding, “I understand their desire to create hype around the U.S. team, but today I was much more confident of our victory than I was before our match against Senegal.”
He continued his blunt assessment: “The Senegal national team has a much stronger squad than the U.S. team.”
