Canada lost the match 3-0, exiting the tournament in the round of 16. Despite the defeat, this remains the best-ever World Cup performance in the history of “Les Rouges.”

Davies was widely expected to feature against Morocco, or at least play a part in the match. However, that did not happen, and it was later revealed that the flying left-back insisted on remaining on the bench.

“I had a conversation with [coach] Jesse Marsch,” Davies said regarding the incident. “He asked me if I was 100% ready, and I honestly told him no.”

He added: “It’s an injury where you just can’t take any risks. Looking at my history with hamstring injuries, I’ve had them three times in a row over the past three or four months, which makes it a very sensitive issue.”

“Every time I step onto the pitch, I want to give it my all and play with total freedom and without injuries. But at that moment, it was tough. It was definitely hard sitting there watching the game, knowing I wasn’t 100% ready,” Davies concluded.

Backlash and Captaincy Demands

The criticism from Canadian fans didn’t stop after the match. It escalated to the point where many demanded he be stripped of the captain’s armband. Fans argued that he refused to take a risk for his country in the most important match of their history, solely to maintain his fitness for his return to Bayern Munich.

In general, the 24-year-old only played 15 minutes during the round-of-32 match against South Africa, following an injury sustained at the end of last season with Bayern Munich. The German club has notably signed a new left-back, Nathaniel Brown from Eintracht Frankfurt, to compete with the Canadian star.
