Egypt’s Mohamed Hany entered World Cup history through the back door after scoring another own goal during the Pharaohs’ Round of 32 match against Australia at the 2026 World Cup.
The Al-Ahli right-back had previously netted an own goal during Egypt’s group stage match against Belgium, despite being one of the standout performers for the Pharaohs that night.
Today against Australia, and despite putting on another solid performance, Hany erred once more, inadvertently gifting the Socceroos an equalizer against Egypt. Edin O’Neill delivered a powerful cross from a free-kick just outside the penalty box on the left flank; while Hany attempted to clear it with his head, he accidentally guided the ball past goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir.
By doing so, Hany has become only the second player in World Cup history to score two own goals in a single edition of the tournament, matching the unwanted record set by Bulgaria’s Ivan Vutsov at the 1966 World Cup.
In general, this 2026 edition of the World Cup has officially become the tournament with the highest number of own goals in history, reaching 13 own goals, 9 of which were conceded by Arab national teams.
