Nagelsmann Resigns as Germany Coach; DFB Opens Talks With Klopp

Julian Nagelsmann has resigned from his position as Germany’s head coach following the Die Mannschaft’s shocking and unexpected elimination from the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup at the hands of Paraguay. Meanwhile, the German Football Association (DFB) has entered into negotiations with Jürgen Klopp to succeed him.

The 39-year-old manager took charge of the German national team in 2023, succeeding Hansi Flick, and famously guided his country to the quarter-finals of UEFA Euro 2024.

At the 2026 World Cup, Germany enjoyed a strong start with back-to-back victories over Curaçao and Ivory Coast. However, they suffered a defeat against Ecuador in their final group game before ultimately bowing out of the tournament against Paraguay on penalties in the Round of 32.

During a meeting on Thursday, the DFB urged Nagelsmann to step down. The former Bayern Munich boss yielded to these demands, officially ending his tenure with the national team on Friday—two years prior to the expiration of his contract, which was set to run until Euro 2028.

Commenting on his resignation, Nagelsmann said: “I’ve done a lot of thinking in the days since our elimination and have consulted with trusted individuals both personally and within the federation.” He added: “The decision was anything but easy for me. My top priority has always been the team’s success. After such a bitter disappointment, they deserve the chance for a fresh start.”

In an official statement regarding Nagelsmann’s successor, the DFB announced: “Regarding the appointment of a new coach, the DFB leadership will now seek talks with Jürgen Klopp. He has already signaled his general willingness to take on the position.”

Klopp currently serves as the Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull. However, he is free to leave, as his contract reportedly includes a specific exit clause allowing him to depart should he receive an offer to manage the German national team.
