Morocco continued their thrilling journey in the 2026 World Cup by successfully eliminating the Netherlands on penalties in a dramatic Round of 32 clash at Monterrey Stadium.
Cody Gakpo had given the Netherlands the lead in the 72nd minute, but Issa Diop struck a dramatic equalizer in the 91st minute, rescuing the Atlas Lions from what would have been a very early exit.
Soufiane Rahimi had a golden opportunity to send Morocco through in the final moments of regular time after breaking clear on goal, but Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen made a brilliant save against the Al Ain forward to force extra time.
Despite Morocco’s clear dominance, the deadlock remained unbroken during the extra period, leading to a penalty shootout that showcased stellar performances from both goalkeepers.
Morocco endured a difficult start to the shootout as Neil El Aynaoui missed his spot-kick. However, Justin Kluivert and Jurriën Timber missed their consecutive penalties for the Netherlands. Although Achraf Hakimi failed to capitalize on the advantage and missed his own penalty, Yassine Bounou stepped up.
The heroic Moroccan goalkeeper made a miraculous save against Crysencio Summerville, setting the stage for Ismael Saibari, who calmly converted the fifth penalty to seal a 3-2 shootout victory and secure a place in the Round of 16.
Morocco will now face a highly manageable task against Canada in the Round of 16. The match is scheduled to take place on American soil at Houston Stadium on July 4th.
