Cody Gakpo could not contain his emotions, breaking down in tears after scoring the winning goal for the Netherlands against Morocco in the 2026 World Cup Round of 32.
The Liverpool star capitalized on a precise pass inside the penalty area, firing a powerful shot past goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to give Ronald Koeman’s side the lead in the 71st minute.
Instead of celebrating, Gakpo fell to his knees weeping on the pitch, following one of the most heartbreaking tragedies of his life just hours before kickoff.
Gakpo and his partner had recently announced the devastating loss of their unborn child after months of pregnancy. In a deeply moving joint statement, the couple shared: “With broken hearts, we share the painful news… we lost our baby during pregnancy. Elijah Rafael Gakpo… you will be loved forever, and you will forever be our son.”
With the crucial knockout match against Morocco approaching, the Dutch coaching staff granted Gakpo full permission to return to the Netherlands and remain by his family’s side.
Despite the immense emotional toll, Gakpo insisted on staying with the squad and playing the match. He received immense support from his teammates, led by national team captain Virgil van Dijk.
