Co-hosts Canada have successfully bypassed South Africa, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup Round of 32.
Eustaquio’s 91st-Minute Screamer Sends Canada to the Round of 16
The highly competitive match, played in Los Angeles, was largely balanced, though Canada held a slight edge. Jesse Marsch’s side missed several clear-cut chances against a resilient and heroic Bafana Bafana defense.
As the match seemed destined for extra time, Stephen Eustáquio unleashed a powerful strike from the edge of the penalty box in the 91st minute. The ball flew past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams into the back of the net, sealing Canada’s ticket to the Round of 16.
This milestone marks the first time Canada has ever qualified for this advanced stage of the tournament. Overall, this is only their second victory in World Cup history, following their resounding 6-0 triumph over Qatar in the group stage.
Canada’s Bracket Path: Potential Clash with Morocco or Netherlands
Following their victory over South Africa, Canada will now face the winner of the upcoming Round of 32 blockbuster between Morocco and the Netherlands on July 4th at Houston Stadium.
Quarter-Final Bracket: Should Jesse Marsch’s squad successfully navigate their Round of 16 fixture, Canada’s potential quarter-final opponents will come from the winner of the heavily contested path featuring France, Germany, Sweden, or Paraguay.
With this result, South Africa becomes the second African nation to exit the 2026 World Cup, following Tunisia, who departed in the group stage with zero points.
