Portugal winger Francisco Conceição has stated that he and his teammates feel no special pressure to pass the ball to Cristiano Ronaldo, emphasizing that “The Don” is treated just like any other player in Roberto Martinez’s squad.
Criticism of Ronaldo has intensified following the Seleção’s recent draw against DR Congo. Tensions within the Portuguese camp were further fueled by João Neves’ recent comments, in which he described the 40-year-old as a “legend of the past” who is now on equal footing with the rest of the squad.
Speaking ahead of Portugal’s upcoming match against Uzbekistan, Conceição was asked about the team’s reliance on Ronaldo. “We are not forced to pass the ball to Cristiano Ronaldo,” he responded. “He is here to help us, just like any other teammate in the national team.”
He added: “Ronaldo is treated as part of the group, just like the rest of the players. However, he possesses a massive history alongside a relentless competitive spirit. He remains a role model in terms of leadership and discipline.”
While Conceição’s comments are not entirely negative, analysts suggest they indicate that the dynamics between the players and the legendary forward may not be at their absolute best.
Meanwhile, Portugal manager Roberto Martínez previously defended his decision to play Ronaldo for the full 90 minutes against DR Congo, stating that he is the greatest striker in football history and that it makes no sense to substitute him when the team is searching for a crucial goal.
