The Egypt national football team has secured its first-ever victory in FIFA World Cup history, defeating New Zealand 3-1 in the second round of the group stage at the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Prior to this historic match, the Pharaohs had played 7 World Cup games without a single win, with their best results being three draws against the Netherlands, Ireland, and most recently, Belgium.
The match started tough for the Egyptians as Finn Surman put New Zealand ahead in the 15th minute. Egypt’s performance remained lackluster throughout the first half, but things took a dramatic turn after the interval.
Mostafa Ziko ignited the Egyptian comeback by scoring the equalizer in the 58th minute. Just nine minutes later, Ziko turned provider, assisting Mohamed Salah who netted Egypt’s second goal in the 67th minute.
Super-sub Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet sealed the historic victory, scoring a brilliant third goal to crush New Zealand’s hopes of a comeback and secure three vital points for the Pharaohs.
With this win, Hossam Hassan’s men top the group with 4 points, leading both Belgium and Iran by two points.
This result guarantees Egypt’s qualification for the Round of 32. Even in the worst-case scenario—a defeat against Iran in the final round combined with a Belgian victory over New Zealand—Egypt will still advance as one of the best third-placed teams.
To secure the top spot in the group and potentially face an easier path in the Round of 32, Egypt needs a win against Iran, or a draw coupled with Belgium dropping points against New Zealand.
