The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) have officially qualified for the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup following a convincing 2-0 victory over Australia in their second group stage match.
The hosts took an early lead in the 11th minute when Australia’s Cameron Burgess inadvertently bundled the ball into his own net. Alex Freeman then doubled the advantage for the home side in the 43rd minute, sealing the win before halftime.
With this result, the USA have guaranteed their place in the Round of 32, regardless of the outcomes in the final round of group fixtures.
Group Standings & Knockout Scenarios
Mauricio Pochettino’s squad now sits comfortably at the top of the group with 6 points. Australia remains in second place with 3 points, while Turkey and Paraguay anchor the bottom of the table with 0 points each.
Given the USA’s massive goal difference advantage, even a defeat against Turkey in their final match combined with an Australian victory would almost certainly see the Stars and Stripes advance as group winners.
World Cup Milestone: The United States becomes the second nation to officially book a ticket to the Round of 32, joining co-hosts Mexico, who also secured maximum points from their opening two matches against South Africa and South Korea.
By locking down the top spot in the group, the USA is set to face one of the third-placed teams emerging from Groups 3, 5, 6, 7, or 8 in the next round.
