Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has suggested that Cristiano Ronaldo might play a more restricted role for the “Seleção” in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, noting that the legendary forward fully “accepts his role.”
The Al-Nassr superstar is set to participate in his record-breaking sixth consecutive World Cup. However, despite his status, it appears his presence on the pitch will be managed differently compared to previous editions.
Player, Not Just an Icon
During a press conference, Martinez praised Ronaldo’s tactical intelligence but emphasized a merit-based approach:
“We treat him as a player fighting for his spot in the 2026 World Cup squad, not just as a historical icon,” Martinez stated. “In the national team, we evaluate players day by day. Decisions are based on the present; for us, age is just a number.”

The “5 Substitutes” Strategy
Regarding how to utilize a 41-year-old Ronaldo, Martinez highlighted the modern game’s flexibility:
-
Tactical Depth: “With five substitutions, you practically have one team to start the match and another to finish it. There are different roles, and Cristiano always accepts his.”
-
Equality: “In this squad, everyone is equal. Those who perform their roles perfectly and contribute to winning will play. It’s that simple.”
Ronaldo aims to secure a historic double (Saudi Pro League and AFC Champions League 2) with Al-Nassr before joining Portugal for friendlies against Chile and Nigeria. Portugal will then head to the U.S. to face DR Congo, Uzbekistan, and Colombia in the group stage.
