Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski has reportedly decided to turn down an offer from Chicago Fire, moving closer than ever to a sensational transfer to the Saudi Pro League this summer.
The Polish international has yet to reach an agreement with Barcelona regarding a contract extension. Recent reports suggest that Al-Hilal has presented the 38-year-old striker with a “legendary” offer to join their ranks.
Why Saudi Arabia Over the USA?
According to Polish media, Lewandowski views Saudi Arabia as the ideal destination for several strategic reasons beyond the financial aspect:
-
Proximity to Europe: A flight from Saudi Arabia to Europe takes approximately 5 hours—half the time required to travel from Chicago.
-
Time Zone Alignment: The minimal time difference between Saudi Arabia and Europe is crucial for his daily routine and staying connected with family and business interests.
Record-Breaking Salary
While Al-Hilal is the frontrunner, another unnamed Saudi club has reportedly entered the race. If the move goes through, Lewandowski is expected to become one of the world’s highest-paid athletes, with a projected annual salary ranging between €90 million and €100 million.
However, a stay in Europe remains a slim possibility. Serie A clubs have shown interest, provided the veteran striker lowers his wage demands, currently estimated at €8 million per year.
