According to the newspaper Sport, Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has become a target for Barcelona in the upcoming summer transfer window.
It’s no secret that the Catalan club considers Alessandro Bastoni their first choice to bolster their central defense, but Inter Milan’s high asking price is making the deal extremely complicated for Joan Laporta’s administration.
Sporting director Deco has begun exploring other, less complicated options, and Romero’s name has emerged. He has a release clause in his contract with Tottenham, and Spurs’ relegation to the Championship would significantly reduce his price.
In recent weeks, Deco has explored the possibility of signing Romero, as well as his Tottenham teammate Mike van de Veen, but the Portuguese coach prefers the Argentine and sees him as a better fit for Barcelona.
According to the report, Barcelona has already contacted the player’s representatives and informed them of their interest, and it seems Romero himself would also be interested in wearing the Blaugrana jersey should he leave the Premier League.
Barcelona’s management highly values the 28-year-old’s strong personality, technical abilities, speed, and excellent defensive cover, making him an ideal fit for coach Hansi Flick’s system.
Romero is currently sidelined with a serious knee injury, ending his season with Tottenham. He may have already played his final match for the London club before his likely departure this summer.
