Virgil van Dijk scored a dramatic 100th-minute winner to give Liverpool victory in the first Merseyside derby played at Hill Dickenson Stadium in the Premier League.
Beto had equalized for Everton in response to Mohamed Salah’s opener, before Van Dijk rose to meet Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner in stoppage time to snatch all three points.
Just two minutes after an Everton goal by Eliamin Ndiaye was ruled out for offside, Mohamed Salah capitalized on a Cody Gakpo pass to give Arne Slott’s side the lead against the run of play in the first half.
David Moyes’s team leveled the score when Beto converted a Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall cross.
Then, in the 10th minute of the 11 minutes of added time, Van Dijk scored the goal that broke the hearts of Everton fans. With this goal, Liverpool have now scored six decisive goals in the 90th minute or later against Everton in the Premier League, the most by any team against a single opponent in the competition’s history.
