Referee Mostafa Shahdy was unable to contain his emotions after sustaining an injury while officiating the El Gouna vs. Modern Sport match on Tuesday in the 2026 Egyptian Premier League.
In the 23rd minute, the promising referee twisted his ankle without any contact and fell to the ground at Cairo International Stadium. El Gouna’s medical staff rushed to his aid, attempting to treat what appeared to be a very serious injury.
Attempts to alleviate Shahdy’s pain were unsuccessful, and he was forced to leave the field in tears, visibly affected by the injury. He was replaced by fourth official Mohamed Abdel Awad.
Shahdy’s emotional outburst garnered sympathy from everyone on the pitch and on television, especially given that the injury could sideline him for a considerable period.
Overall, Shahdy has officiated 17 matches this season across the Egyptian Premier League, the Cairo Cup, and the Egypt Cup, issuing 80 yellow cards, 6 red cards, and awarding 7 penalties.
Shahdi was the referee for the Ghazl El Mahalla vs. Al Ahly Bank match at the start of the relegation group competition on March 21st. His last appearance before today was in the Ismailia Electricity vs. Petrojet match last week, during which he issued two red cards.
