Ghana had sacked coach Adu Otto after a 2-1 loss to Germany during the last international break in March. Since then, the club had been linked to several high-profile coaches, most notably Hervé Renard, the current Saudi Arabia national team coach.

Ultimately, due to the uncertainty surrounding Renard’s potential departure from Saudi Arabia before the World Cup, coupled with the high salary demands of another prominent name, German coach Joachim Löw, the Ghanaian FA opted for the more realistic and logical choice: Queiroz.

The Portuguese coach boasts an impressive career and extensive experience with African national teams, having previously managed South Africa 20 years ago, in addition to his most recent stint with Egypt in 2022.

Queiroz will be participating in his fifth consecutive World Cup, having led Portugal in 2010 and Iran in the last three editions.

Queiroz, who resigned from his position as Oman’s coach a few weeks ago due to the situation in the Gulf region, commented on his appointment as Ghana’s coach, saying, “This isn’t just a job; it’s a mission, and I’m ready to give my all once again, with all my experience and knowledge, to serve the game and bring joy to the fans.”

It’s worth noting that the 2026 World Cup draw placed Ghana in a challenging group alongside a star-studded England side, Croatia (third place in the previous edition), and Panama.
