Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury sustained during Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Sunderland.
The 27-year-old Argentine defender appeared visibly distressed as he limped off the pitch after a collision with goalkeeper Antonin Kinski in the Premier League match at the Stadium of Light.
Following medical tests, Romero is now expected to be sidelined for up to eight weeks with a high-grade partial tear of his medial collateral ligament.
Romero’s absence is a significant blow for new manager Roberto De Zerbi, who is desperately trying to keep Tottenham in the Premier League. Spurs currently sit 18th in the table, two points adrift of safety.
Meanwhile, the Argentine defender faces the risk of missing the 2026 World Cup if his recovery is delayed or doesn’t progress according to the established timeline.
Romero has made 32 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring six goals and providing four assists. He has recently experienced some difficulties at the London club, making his departure next summer highly likely.
