Tottenham suffered another bitter defeat, this time at the hands of Sunderland, losing 1-0 in the 32nd round of the English Premier League.
This was Roberto De Zerbi’s first match as Tottenham manager, having been appointed a week earlier to replace Croatian Igor Tudor in what was described as a “suicide mission” to save Spurs from relegation.
The Italian hoped to end Tottenham’s 14-match winless streak in the Premier League, which stretched into 2026, but things didn’t go as planned.
Nordi Mukiele’s 20-yard shot deflected off Spurs defender Mickey van de Veen, changing direction dramatically and leaving goalkeeper Antonin Kinski helpless.
Spurs then lost their captain, Cristian Romero, to injury after he was pushed by Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey, resulting in a collision with goalkeeper Kinske.
With this defeat, their points tally remains at 30, dropping them to 18th place, the relegation zone, two points behind West Ham, who secured a resounding 4-0 victory over Wolverhampton on Saturday.
De Zerbi will be hoping for his first win with Tottenham next week when they face his former club, Brighton, in his first appearance at the Spurs’ stadium in London.
