Lewandowski’s shoulder gives Barcelona a crucial win over Atlético Madrid

Barcelona overturned a one-goal deficit to defeat Atlético Madrid 2-1 in a thrilling match in the 30th round of La Liga.

Atlético Madrid fielded a heavily rotated lineup, missing five key players and resting Julian Álvarez and David Hanko.

Hansi Flick also experimented with tactics, perhaps not entirely with Wednesday’s Champions League clash in mind, deploying Dani Olmo in the false nine role instead of Ferran Torres and Robert Lewandowski.

In the 40th minute, Clément Lenglet delivered a precise long ball from deep, finding Giuliano Simeone in an offside position. Simeone controlled the ball brilliantly and finished with a clinical strike, giving Atlético Madrid the lead.

Just three minutes after Atlético’s goal, Rashford received the ball on the left from Olmo’s pass, surged forward from his own half, dribbling past full-back Nahuel Molina, before exchanging a one-two with Olmo and slotting it past Musso to equalize.

In the final minute of the first half, Lenglet received a red card for a foul on Lamine Yamal on the edge of the penalty area.

Two minutes into the second half, Gerard Martin was also sent off, but this time the review spared him. Flick and Barcelona breathed a sigh of relief, and the Catalan side began to control the game by maintaining possession in Atlético’s half.

In the 87th minute, Cancelo dribbled past Molina and unleashed a powerful shot that Musso parried, only for the ball to deflect off Robert Lewandowski’s shoulder and into the net, securing the victory for Barça.

With this result, Barcelona extended their lead over Real Madrid to seven points, capitalizing on the Royal Club’s 2-1 defeat to Mallorca.

Barcelona will face Atletico Madrid for the fourth time this season, but this time in the Champions League, next Wednesday in the first leg of the quarter-finals at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.
