A headache for De la Fuente: Who will be Spain’s goalkeeper against Egypt?

Questions are mounting about who will start in goal for Spain in their final match of the current international break against Egypt, scheduled for Tuesday.

Unai Simón guarded La Roja’s net in their opening match against Serbia, when Lamine Yamal’s team secured a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Luis De la Fuente finds himself in a quandary given the abundance of goalkeepers in Spain. Besides Simón, there’s David Raya of Arsenal and Juan García, who has been in excellent form for Barcelona.

According to the newspaper AS, Raya is currently the favorite to start against Egypt after De la Fuente praised him extensively in recent days.

It seems that Juan García’s debut will depend on whether De la Fuente changes his tactics against Egypt and gives more than one goalkeeper a chance.

Garcia received his first call-up from De la Fuente during the March international break, and it was expected that he would quickly become his country’s first-choice goalkeeper given his phenomenal performances with Barcelona.

However, De la Fuente made a surprising statement, confirming that Simon would remain Spain’s number one and expressing his full confidence in him, despite the Basque goalkeeper not having the best of times with Athletic Bilbao.

It’s worth noting that Garcia’s current ambition is to be Spain’s third-choice goalkeeper at the 2026 World Cup, but even that is not guaranteed, as he first needs to outperform Real Sociedad’s Alex Remiro in that competition.
