Ajax star Ryan Bonida has decided to represent Morocco internationally, rejecting a lucrative offer from the Belgian Football Association.
The 20-year-old Bonida is considered one of the most promising talents in world football. He has previously represented Belgium at the under-21 level, but is of Moroccan descent.
According to Moroccan media, Bonida contacted officials from the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, and the federation’s president, Fouzi Lekjaa, successfully persuaded the player to represent Morocco.
Over the past few months, Belgium tried to lure Bonida away, offering him several opportunities to play for their senior national team. However, the player’s desire ultimately prevailed, and he decided to join the Atlas Lions.
Bonida has already informed Belgian officials of his decision, and he is likely to make his debut for Morocco before the 2026 World Cup.
This season, Bonida has made 18 appearances in the Dutch league for Ajax, scoring one goal and providing four assists.
