The Senegalese Football Federation has refused to return the Africa Cup of Nations trophy and gold medals to CAF, in a new escalation following the decision to strip the Lions of Teranga of their title.
Due to the Senegalese players walking off the pitch in the final minutes of the final against Morocco in protest against the penalty awarded to Brahim Diaz, CAF ruled that Sadio Mane and his teammates had forfeited, resulting in a 3-0 forfeit victory for Morocco.
When asked about returning the trophy and medals to CAF, Abdoulaye Sow, the Secretary General of the Senegalese Football Federation, replied, “That’s absolutely not possible.”
He added, “There is a clear provision stating that the decisions of the Appeals Committee are implemented unless an appeal is filed with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which is what we will do.”
He continued, “We have already received the prize money for winning the title, and we will not take any action until the court issues its ruling.”
The Senegalese Federation had also announced its intention to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to overturn CAF’s decision in one of the most controversial cases in the history of African football.
