The Senegalese Football Federation (FES) has announced its intention to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after the country was stripped of its Africa Cup of Nations title.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced its decision Tuesday evening, awarding the victory to Morocco, two months after the controversial conclusion of the tournament.
The Appeals Committee ruled that Senegal had forfeited the match (by default) after its players left the field in protest against a controversial penalty awarded late in stoppage time.
In a statement released on the X platform, FES described the decision as “unjust, unprecedented, and unacceptable,” adding that it “tarnishes the reputation of African football.”
The statement continued: “In defense of the rights and interests of Senegalese football, the Federation will initiate, as soon as possible, the appeal proceedings before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne.”
For his part, Abdoulaye Seydou Sow, the general secretary of the Senegalese Football Federation, told Senegalese public radio and television late Tuesday evening: “We will not back down, the law is on our side,” describing the ruling as “a disgrace to Africa.”
