Real Madrid overcame Manchester City, defeating them 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie.
The first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu had ended in a 3-0 victory for Los Blancos, giving them a 4-1 aggregate win and a place in the quarter-finals.
Vinicius Junior opened the scoring for Real Madrid from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute, and Bernardo Silva was sent off, leaving the English club to play the remainder of the match with ten men.
Before half-time, Erling Haaland finally got on the scoresheet. Jérémy Doku, who had been a constant threat down the left flank, beat Thiago Pitarch, and Trent Alexander-Arnold failed to clear the cross, allowing Haaland to tap the ball into the far post.
In the dying moments of the first half, Vinicius Junior sealed the victory, scoring his second goal of the match and Real Madrid’s second, securing the Spanish club’s place in the quarter-finals. Real Madrid faces a tough task in the quarterfinals, as they will be drawn against Bayern Munich. The first leg will be played at the Bernabéu, and the return leg at the Allianz Arena.
