Liverpool have finalized an agreement with Xabi Alonso to take over as manager of the English club on a three-year contract.
If this verbal agreement is activated, the Basque coach will take charge of the Reds starting next July, succeeding current manager Arne Slott.
Alonso rejected several offers from clubs across Europe’s top five leagues in recent times, preferring to take a break after his challenging experience with Real Madrid.
In recent weeks, Liverpool officials contacted Alonso, who has been on the English radar since 2024. However, at that time, he opted to stay with Bayer Leverkusen and declined the opportunity to succeed Jürgen Klopp at Anfield.
But this time, after his experience with Real Madrid, Alonso believes that returning to Merseyside is the ideal step for his career, aiming to revive his career at the highest level, especially since managing Liverpool has been his long-held dream.
Liverpool will only activate the agreement with Alonso if Arne Slott succeeds in leading the team to the Champions League title.
Liverpool’s performance and results have declined significantly this season under Slott, and he was on the verge of being sacked mid-season, but the Reds’ management refused to take this step and preferred to wait until the end of the season.
The Dutch coach’s last chance is to win the Champions League and the FA Cup; otherwise, Alonso will undoubtedly replace him.
