Brazilian club Flamengo announced the dismissal of their coach, former Chelsea defender Filipe Luis, just hours after he led the team to a resounding 8-0 victory, securing their place in the Campeonato Carioca final this weekend.
Despite his dismissal, Luis, 40, achieved remarkable success, averaging one title every 14 matches. He guided Flamengo to seven trophies in 100 matches as manager since taking over from former Brazil coach Tite in September 2014.
Despite the emphatic 11-0 aggregate win over Madureira, Flamengo suffered two consecutive final defeats in 2016, finishing as runners-up in both the Brazilian Super Cup and the Recopa Sudamericana last month.
Just as Luis was set to lead the team to their third consecutive Carioca Championship title against Fluminense this Sunday, the club’s surprising decision came.
It’s worth noting that Luis, who previously won the English Premier League with Chelsea under José Mourinho in 2015, guided Flamengo to continental glory by winning the Copa Libertadores in 2025. This made him the ninth person in history to win the tournament as both a player and a coach, having also won it as a player in 2019 and 2022.
