A Spanish player faces a harsh penalty after directing racist abuse at an Arab player

The Elche-Espanyol match in La Liga on Sunday witnessed unfortunate events that will cast a shadow over the world of football for some time.

The referee halted the match for three minutes after Moroccan player Omar El Hilali complained of racist abuse from Elche player Rafa Mir.

According to El Hilali, the Spanish player attacked him, saying, “You came here in a small boat,” a racist insult that prompted the referee to intervene and activate the standard anti-racism protocol.

The newspaper Mundo Deportivo reports that the Spanish Football Federation’s disciplinary committee will open an exceptional case to gather further information about the incident.

Both parties will be asked to provide their accounts of the events in order to complete the investigation. If there is insufficient evidence, the case may be closed without penalty.

However, if Mir is found guilty, he will face a severe punishment, potentially a 10-match suspension, along with a fine that could reach €3,000.

National and regional football associations currently have zero tolerance for racism, as evidenced by the ongoing cases of Gianluca Prestini and Vinicius Junior.
