The Champions League witnessed another dramatic upset, this time at the New Balance Arena in northern Italy, during the second leg of their Round of 16 playoff match between Atalanta and Borussia Dortmund.
The first leg at Signal Iduna Park had seen the German club secure a comfortable 2-0 victory, leading many to believe that Serhou Guirassy and his teammates were finished and the return leg would be a mere formality.
However, Atalanta stunned the Germans with a perfect comeback, taking a 2-0 lead in the first half through goals from Scamacca and Zappacosta, before Mario Pasalic added a third in the 57th minute.
Karim Adeyemi pulled one back for Dortmund in the 77th minute, leveling the score once again, before Samardzic secured Atalanta’s qualification with a penalty in the final minute.
Atalanta now awaits either Arsenal or Bayern Munich in the round of 16, depending on the draw scheduled for next Friday.
This result is undoubtedly the second major upset of the Champions League this season, following Bodø/Glimt’s stunning victory yesterday, which eliminated last season’s runners-up, Inter Milan, with a 5-2 aggregate score.
