The Spanish newspaper Sport reported that Chicago Fire has made an official offer to Robert Lewandowski to acquire his services on a free transfer this summer, once his contract with Barcelona expires.
It is unlikely that Barça will renew the Polish star’s contract, given that he is 37 years old and his performance has noticeably declined. The player is currently looking for a new club, with a glimmer of hope that the Catalan club might reconsider and extend his stay for at least another year.
According to the report, Chicago Fire has offered Lewandowski a substantial salary and a two-year contract, which would solidify his status as one of the most important stars in MLS in the future.
Negotiations between Chicago and Lewandowski have been ongoing for months. His wife was even seen in Chicago last November, where she made a brief visit to explore the city before making a final decision on whether to accept or reject the offer.
A delegation from the American club met with Lewandowski and his entourage in December, and in recent weeks, it has been reported that the player’s agent, Pini Zahavi, met with Chicago Fire owner Joe Mansueto, with Lewandowski present, in London.
Lewandowski has not yet made a decision regarding the offer, but he is clearly interested in the idea, especially given Chicago Fire’s ambitious sporting project and the potential for the Polish striker to spearhead the club’s anticipated transformation.
It’s worth noting that Lewandowski is not the only big name Chicago Fire is pursuing. The American club has also been linked with stars such as Kevin De Bruyne, Mohamed Salah, and Bernardo Silva.
