In a surprising turn of events, Barcelona’s management is now prepared to renew Robert Lewandowski’s contract for another year, but with a condition.
The Polish international’s contract with Barça expires at the end of the current season, and the prevailing sentiment under Joan Laporta’s administration was against renewal, given the clear decline in the player’s performance due to his age.
According to ESPN, Barcelona has now reconsidered its previous stance and is open to renewing Lewandowski’s contract for another year, provided he agrees to a significant pay cut and accepts a more limited role on the bench.
Barcelona officials understand that signing a new striker of Lewandowski’s caliber requires substantial funds, which are currently unavailable at Camp Nou due to the economic crisis. The club is also prioritizing strengthening other positions next summer.
It is said that Hansi Flick himself requested that Lewandowski stay and renew his contract, especially given the difficulty of immediately replacing him in the summer. Barcelona’s management now believes that keeping the 38-year-old for another year would be the best option for all parties.
Ferran Torres will be Barcelona’s first-choice striker next season, with Lewandowski’s role being to support him occasionally. It is said that Lewandowski is willing to accept this role, especially since he and his family wish to remain in Catalonia for as long as possible.
