Moroccan press reports indicate that the Royal Moroccan Football Federation has decided to renew its confidence in Walid Regragui, allowing him to continue as coach of the Moroccan national team for the 2026 World Cup.
Regragui failed to lead Morocco to victory in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after losing the final to Senegal 1-0.
According to the newspaper Al-Mountakhab, Regragui had intended to resign after being held responsible by Moroccan fans for the final loss, and he faced widespread criticism and persistent calls for his dismissal.
Ultimately, Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the federation, decided that Regragui would remain in his position until the 2026 World Cup and would not be dismissed, especially given the Moroccan team’s strong performance throughout the tournament and their success in defeating some major teams on their way to the final.
It is likely that Regragui will only make changes to his coaching staff, with some members leaving and others remaining. Otherwise, he will lead the Atlas Lions for the second consecutive time in the World Cup.
It is worth noting that Regragui took over as Morocco’s coach a few months before the 2022 Qatar World Cup following the surprise dismissal of Vahid Halilhodžić, and achieved a remarkable feat by reaching the semi-finals and finishing fourth.
