Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has dismissed rumors that this season will be Diego Simeone’s last at the helm of Los Rojiblancos.
Spanish newspapers have recently reported that Atletico Madrid’s new owners are unhappy with Simeone’s management style, and that significant disagreements have arisen between the two parties over the past few months.
Meanwhile, press reports have indicated a shared discontent between Simeone and sporting director Mateo Alemany, suggesting that the new owners are not supportive of the Argentine coach and are beginning to believe a change is necessary.
Cerezo responded to these reports in a media statement, saying, “I don’t know who is talking about sacking Diego Simeone, but he will continue with us.”
He added, “He has been with us for 15 years and will continue for many more. We trust him, and he is a key part of the team’s project.”
Atletico Madrid are currently third in the Spanish league standings this season, have reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, and face a complicated task in the Champions League round of 16 play-off against Belgian side Club Brugge.
