FIFA President Gianni Infantino reiterated his support on Monday for lifting the ban preventing Russia from participating in international competitions, arguing that the measure “has achieved nothing.”
FIFA and UEFA announced in a joint statement in February 2022 the exclusion of Russia from the 2022 World Cup and the suspension of its teams from all international football competitions “until further notice,” following President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
While in London last weekend for the Women’s Champions League, Infantino told Sky Sports that the ban should be lifted now, at least for youth categories.
Infantino said: “We absolutely have to consider readmitting Russia. This ban has achieved nothing; it has only created more frustration and hatred. Allowing boys and girls from Russia to play football in other parts of Europe could help resolve the issue. It’s something we should definitely do, at least at the youth level.”
UEFA had relaxed its policy in 2023 to allow under-17 teams to compete, but reversed the decision after widespread opposition from its members.
Infantino has previously expressed his support for Russia, stating at the UEFA Congress last April that he wanted to see Russia reinstated “because that would mean all the problems are solved.”
UEFA’s Executive Committee is scheduled to meet later this month and has the authority to oversee the country’s return to competition.
