British media outlets reported that Liverpool has won the race to sign defender Jérémy Jacquet, after a fierce competition with Chelsea that lasted throughout the past month.
Jacquet had initially agreed to join Chelsea before changing his mind and opting for Liverpool’s offer, despite both being financially equal. He felt his playing time with the Reds would be significantly greater than what awaited him at Stamford Bridge.
According to Sky Sports, Liverpool has reached an agreement with Rennes to purchase Jacquet for a total of €65 million. The player will remain with the French club until the end of the current season and will join Arne Slott’s squad starting in July.
The Jacquet signing is crucial for Liverpool, who will lose the services of their central defender Ibrahima Konaté at the end of the current season. This comes after the collapse of contract renewal negotiations between the two parties and the player’s decision to end his time at Anfield and seek a new challenge.
Jacquet is considered one of the most promising young players in the world in recent times, which has put him on the radar of many clubs, most notably Real Madrid. However, the Spanish giants preferred to wait until next summer before attempting to sign him, and now they have completely lost the deal.
It should be noted that the 20-year-old will officially sign a five-year contract with Liverpool within hours, keeping him with the Reds until the summer of 2031.
