Karim Benzema is unlikely to complete his contract with Al-Ittihad and may leave the Saudi club within the next few hours, returning to the French league.
Benzema feels deeply disrespected by Al-Ittihad officials after the latest contract renewal offer, which includes playing for free and having image rights as his sole source of income.
Benzema believes he is no longer welcome at Al-Ittihad and does not want to continue with the Jeddah Tigers. He is convinced that the Saudi management is trying to terminate his contract, according to journalist Sacha Tavoleri.
The 37-year-old has already asked Al-Ittihad not to include him in the upcoming match against Al-Najma, scheduled for Sunday in the Saudi league, in a further escalation after also refusing to play against Al-Fateh last week.
As for Benzema’s next destination, a return to the French league seems the most likely scenario, where he hopes to impress coach Didier Deschamps and, consequently, secure a place in the 2026 World Cup squad, which kicks off next June in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
If Benzema leaves Al-Ittihad, it will be a major blow to coach Sergio Conceição, as his attacking options will be significantly reduced given the expected departure of Moussa Diaby to Inter Milan, in addition to the considerable loss of the Real Madrid legend’s immense influence in the dressing room.
It’s worth noting that Al-Ittihad currently sits in sixth place in the Saudi Pro League standings with 31 points, has reached the King’s Cup semi-finals, and is still competing for a spot in the Round of 16 of the AFC Champions League.
