Young French defender Jérémy Jacquet is close to completing his move from Rennes to Chelsea. The only remaining obstacle is the timing of the transfer, despite a near-agreement on the transfer fee.
Jacquet was on Real Madrid’s shortlist of potential defensive reinforcements for next summer, but the Spanish giants refused to attempt to contact or reach an agreement with the player before the end of the season.
On the other hand, Chelsea moved quickly and successfully convinced Jacquet of their project. It seems the 20-year-old will not wait for Real Madrid or any other club and his next destination will be Stamford Bridge.
According to recent reports, Chelsea hopes to finalize the Jacquet deal this winter, while Rennes prefers to complete it in the summer. However, an agreement between the two clubs is very close.
One possible option is for Chelsea to buy the player and then loan him back to Rennes until the end of the season. All options are on the table, including an outright purchase.
Jacquet is considered one of the most promising defenders in the world in recent years, possessing physical strength, height, and the ability to build play perfectly from the back, making him a significant addition to Chelsea now and in the future.
Following Jacquet’s departure, Real Madrid will have to look for another defender, and Dayot Upamecano of Bayern Munich is perhaps the most likely option at the moment, after he rejected the Bavarian club’s latest contract extension offer, which expires next summer.
