Raheem Sterling’s time at Chelsea has come to an end, with the club announcing on Wednesday evening that the 31-year-old’s contract has been terminated by mutual agreement.
Sterling’s contract with Chelsea was set to run until the summer of 2027, with a weekly wage of £325,000, one of the highest in the Premier League.
Since May 2024, Sterling has not played for Chelsea, having fallen completely out of favor with manager Enzo Maresca. He was then loaned to Arsenal and returned last summer hoping to change the Italian manager’s mind, but he remained sidelined, and the situation did not improve with the arrival of Liam Rosenior last month.
Chelsea’s management made persistent attempts to terminate Sterling’s contract last summer, but the player insisted on staying and rejected all offers, most notably from Bayer Leverkusen.
Sterling joined Chelsea in the summer of 2021 from Manchester City for £47.5 million, making 81 appearances and scoring 19 goals.
According to the BBC, Sterling wants to stay in the Premier League, specifically move to a London club, and the situation should become clearer in the coming days.
