Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi refused to pay the release clause stipulated in Dro Fernandez’s contract with Barcelona, opting instead to negotiate with the Catalan club for a higher fee to maintain the good relationship between the two parties.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta had publicly expressed his extreme anger at Dro’s departure and launched a scathing attack on his agent, who also represents PSG coach Luis Enrique.
The French club could have acquired Drogba for just €6 million, but Al-Khelaifi ultimately contacted Laporta and decided to pay €8.5 million to secure the 18-year-old.
The relationship between Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain has strengthened considerably in the past year, and Al-Khelaifi is keen to avoid any provocations that could jeopardize the recent progress.
It is said that Laporta greatly appreciated Al-Khelaifi’s personal intervention and his desire to avoid antagonizing Barcelona, and that Drew’s move to the Parc des Princes will not affect the positive and amicable relationship between the two parties.
It is worth noting that Hansi Flick promoted Drew to the first team and intended to gradually give him playing time, considering him one of the most promising Spanish talents currently. This made his departure “the biggest disappointment of the German coach’s career.”
Dro’s transfer to PSG was announced on Monday evening. The promising player signed a long-term contract until the summer of 2030 and will join the first team immediately.
