Walid Regragui’s future with the Moroccan national team will be decided in the coming days after a meeting between him and the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, to discuss everything that transpired during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Over the past few days, several Moroccan media outlets have confirmed that Regragui’s fate hangs in the balance and that his dismissal is more likely than ever after his failure to lead the Atlas Lions to victory in the Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco.
The Moroccan newspaper Al-Mountakhab reported that Lekjaa has not yet made a final decision regarding Regragui’s fate and is awaiting the technical report that the coach will present during the meeting scheduled for this week before making a final decision about the national coach’s future.
At the moment, it seems most likely that Regragui will leave the Moroccan national team immediately and will not be given the opportunity to coach the Atlas Lions in the 2026 World Cup, especially given the significant public anger directed at him recently.
A Moroccan name is strongly tipped to succeed Regragui, and it is most likely that of Tarik Sektioui, coach of the second national team that won the CHAN and Arab Cup titles. Another suggestion is to hire a foreign coach, and it is said that two names are on Lekjaa’s shortlist, but their identities have not been revealed to the media.
Regragui took over the Moroccan national team under difficult circumstances after the dismissal of Vahid Halilhodžić before the 2022 World Cup.
