The Senegalese national team was crowned champion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Morocco 1-0 in the final match at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
The first half was a thrilling and closely contested affair, with both sides squandering chances, though Senegal held the upper hand thanks to a stellar performance from goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.
Morocco had two clear opportunities to score the opening goal in the second half, the most notable being a missed chance by Ayoub El Kaabi.
The game took a dramatic turn in the 90th minute when referee Ndala disallowed a controversial goal for Senegal, followed by a penalty awarded to Morocco in the 95th minute.
The Senegalese players walked off the pitch, but returned after Sadio Mane’s insistence. Then came the final blow when Brahim Diaz missed the penalty, attempting a Panenka-style shot that was easily saved by Edouard Mendy.
The match went to extra time, during which it became clear how psychologically Morocco suffered from the missed penalty.
