Officially… Africa Cup of Nations 2027 Postponed

Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), announced the postponement of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which was scheduled to be held in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.

The 2025 edition was held in Morocco on a new schedule, starting in December and ending in January 2026, contrary to the originally scheduled date of June 2025, due to the FIFA Club World Cup being held at the same time.

According to Motsepe, the original schedule for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations was for the tournament to begin in February of the same year.

Motsepe indicated that Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya needed more time to prepare for the upcoming event, and therefore it was decided to postpone the tournament until August 2027.

At the closing press conference for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Motsepe added, “We felt it was important to give the host countries a greater opportunity to invest and inject more of the necessary funds to organize the tournament in a manner befitting the stature of African football.”

It is worth noting that CAF has opened the bidding process for hosting the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations, after which the tournament will be held every four years, similar to the European Championship and the Asian Cup.
