A new video has surfaced revealing what really happened during Barcelona’s 2026 Spanish Super Cup victory when Real Madrid players failed to form the customary guard of honor for the champions.
Initial reports indicated that Kylian Mbappé was the one who refused to participate and urged his teammates to do the same, while Real Madrid claimed that the Spanish Football Federation’s regulations prevented the guard of honor.
Another clip from the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium (The Shining Jewel) shows Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso and defender Raúl Asensio moving towards forming a guard of honor for Barcelona, asking the rest of the players to join them.
However, surprisingly, Mbappé, along with Rodrygo, refused to obey Alonso’s order, forcing the coach to abandon the idea and yield to his French star’s wishes.
This behavior puts Alonso in a very embarrassing position with Real Madrid’s management and fans, raising questions about the coach’s personality and his control within the dressing room, particularly regarding Mbappé and his teammates and their differing opinions.
It’s well known that Alonso’s relationship with some Real Madrid players, most notably Vinicius Junior, has been strained. Mbappé’s actions, despite his excellent relationship with the coach, perhaps confirm that the Basque coach practically cannot fully control the Merengues’ stars, which ultimately has a negative impact on everything.
While Real Madrid’s management is unlikely to dismiss Alonso at present, this recent video could eventually lead to a change in their stance, especially if it becomes clear that the coach is completely yielding to Mbappé’s or other stars’ demands and failing to effectively lead the team.
