Paris Saint-Germain has been working to renew Ousmane Dembele’s contract, which runs until the summer of 2028. However, the French club has faced a major setback due to the exorbitant financial demands made by the player’s agent.
PSG’s management has recently adopted a strict approach to renewing the contracts of the core players who achieved the historic treble, and retaining Dembele is a priority for Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the head of the project at the Parc des Princes.
PSG offered Dembele a two-year contract extension with a salary increase to €30 million annually, making him the joint highest-paid player in Europe alongside Kylian Mbappe at Real Madrid. Surprisingly, the French star rejected the offer.
According to Foot Mercato, Dembele’s agent wants his client to receive double the offered amount, meaning an annual salary of €60 million.
Dembélé and his entourage believe that his potential 2025 Ballon d’Or win and FIFA’s The Best award, coupled with his significant influence on Paris Saint-Germain, justify a salary that places him above any other player in Europe’s top five leagues.
The current dilemma lies in Paris Saint-Germain’s adherence to a specific salary structure, no longer offering astronomical wages as in previous decades. This policy has become unassailable, particularly after Mbappé’s free transfer to Real Madrid in the summer of 2024.
PSG’s management is expected to present Dembélé with a new, improved offer. If the player maintains his stance, Nasser Al-Khelaifi will face a choice: either concede to his demands and bear the consequences for the dressing room, or allow him to leave early and replace him with another star player or a handful of promising young talents.
It’s worth noting that Dembélé has made 16 appearances for Paris Saint-Germain this season, scoring 6 goals and providing 4 assists.
