Nigeria becomes the second team to qualify for the Round of 16 of AFCON after defeating Tunisia

The Nigerian national team secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Tunisia at the Fes Sports Complex in the second round of the group stage of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

In the first half, Victor Osimhen opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 44th minute with a superb header, followed by Wilfred Ndidi’s second goal in the 49th minute, also a header.

Ademola Lookman then added a third goal for Nigeria with a brilliant individual effort, leading many to believe the match was over with the Super Eagles leading 3-0.

However, Tunisia nearly staged a historic comeback. Montassar Talbi pulled one back with a header in the 74th minute, and Ali Abdi converted a penalty in the 86th minute, igniting the match.

Tunisia came close to equalizing on several occasions, with the most notable chance coming in the dying moments when Ferjani Sassi’s header went just wide of the post.

Prior to this match, Uganda and Tanzania drew 1-1.

Thus, Nigeria reached 6 points and officially secured their place in the Round of 16, becoming the second team to do so after Egypt. Like the Pharaohs, Egypt also secured first place in the group.

Tunisia remained on 3 points in second place, while Tanzania and Uganda finished third and fourth respectively, both with one point each, ahead on goal difference.
