History is often used to predict the future, and in this case, Egypt appears to be the favorite to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Morocco.
The Pharaohs secured their place in the Round of 16 by topping Group B after victories against Zimbabwe and South Africa. They will now face one of the third-placed teams from Groups A, C, or D in the Round of 16.
The last time Egypt won their first two group stage matches, they went on to win the AFCON title. This happened in the 2010 edition in Angola, when Hassan Shehata’s team defeated Nigeria 3-1 and then Mozambique 2-0.
In the 2017 edition, Egypt drew their first match against Mali and then defeated Ghana. In the 2021 edition, under Carlos Queiroz, they lost to Nigeria and then defeated Sudan. In both editions, the Pharaohs lost the final, but this pattern seems to be changing.
Egypt has not won the Africa Cup of Nations since their victory in 2010. The Nile Valley missed the competition for three consecutive editions before returning in 2017 under Héctor Cúper.
Egypt’s last appearance in the Africa Cup of Nations was disappointing, as the Pharaohs, led by Rui Vitória, were eliminated in the round of 16 in the last edition in Ivory Coast after losing to DR Congo on penalties.
